Rodent pest
Mice Control in Elgin, Illinois
Illinois fall rodent pressure is real.
What they look like
House mice are small and gray-brown, roughly 2.5–4 inches of body with a similar-length tail, with large ears and a pointed snout. Deer mice have a white belly and are more common near fields and wood lines.
Signs of an infestation
- Dark, rice-grain droppings along walls, in drawers or under sinks
- Scratching or scurrying in walls and ceilings, usually after dark
- Shredded insulation, paper or fabric used for nesting
- Gnaw marks on food packaging, cardboard or wiring
- A persistent musky odor in enclosed spaces
Where they're found
Garages, basements, attics, under kitchen appliances, inside wall voids, in storage boxes and around water heaters.
Why they show up
Mice need warmth, food and a gap the size of a dime. As nighttime temperatures fall, they follow foundations looking for utility penetrations, gaps under garage doors and vents with damaged screening.
Seasonality in Illinois
Pressure builds sharply from September through November as fields are harvested and temperatures drop, and indoor populations continue breeding all winter.
Prevention tips
- Seal gaps around pipes, dryer vents and utility lines with rodent-resistant material
- Replace worn garage door sweeps and weather stripping
- Keep pet food, birdseed and grass seed in hard sealed containers
- Move firewood and stored materials away from the foundation
- Clear leaf litter and dense ground cover along exterior walls
When to call a professional
One mouse in a trap is rarely one mouse. If droppings keep appearing, if you hear activity in walls or ceilings, or if there is evidence of gnawed wiring, schedule an inspection — the entry point matters more than the trap.
How ProGuard treats mice
ProGuard inspects the structure for entry points and activity, sets a control strategy appropriate to the property, and focuses on exclusion so the same route isn't reused next fall.
