Crawling pest
Cockroaches Control in Elgin, Illinois
A sanitation and reputation problem.
What they look like
German cockroaches are light brown, about 1/2 inch, with two dark stripes behind the head. Oriental cockroaches are darker, shinier and larger, and are usually found in damp low areas.
Signs of an infestation
- Live roaches scattering when a light turns on
- Pepper-like droppings in drawers, hinges and cabinet corners
- Small brown egg cases (oothecae) in tight cracks
- A musty odor in heavily infested spaces
Where they're found
Behind refrigerators and dishwashers, under sinks, inside motor housings, in floor drains, and in warm equipment areas of commercial kitchens.
Why they show up
Roaches need warmth, moisture and food debris. They also hitchhike in cardboard, appliances, grocery deliveries and used furniture, which is how they enter otherwise clean buildings.
Seasonality in Illinois
Indoor populations are active year-round because they live in climate-controlled spaces.
Prevention tips
- Clean under and behind appliances, not just visible surfaces
- Fix leaks and dry out sinks and floor drains overnight
- Break down and remove cardboard quickly
- Store food in sealed containers and empty trash nightly
When to call a professional
German cockroaches reproduce quickly and develop resistance to over-the-counter sprays. If you see one during the day, or find droppings in more than one room, call a professional.
